Can we all collectively as a species just agree on one thing, and that is that dogs are God’s greatest gift to man? If you need further proof, there’s a story about a 2-year-old German shepherd named Rex who just became its owner’s hero of the day.Just days ago armed intruders broke into 16-year-old Javier Mercado‘s house, who was home alone with Rex at the time. The attempted robbery took place in Des Moines, Iowa when Javier heard a noise and peered through a window spotting a car he didn’t recognize. “I then heard the sliding door break, and it is made out of just glass so it shattered really loud,” said Mercado. “My dog ran downstairs, and it just started barking and barking. I heard one guy scream, ‘the dog bit me, get the dog.’”Good, boy! Glad he didn’t pull any punches…or bites, rather. But that wasn’t the end of the break-in…Following the altercation, Javier dialed 911 and hid in a closet. “Rex stormed back to the upstairs floor all beat up and bloody,” explained Javier’s aunt. “Soon, the burglars proceeded to the upstairs floor and trashed all the bedrooms. As they entered the room where Javier was hiding in the closet, Rex came out with the little strength he had left in him and threw himself at them as he knew my nephew was in danger.” In the manic scuffle, the criminals (monsters) shot the dog four times forcing him to give up the fight.Thankfully, Rex’s fight did enough to buy some time and scare the crooks off, as by the time police arrived the intruders had already fled the scene. The cops called for Javier who was still tucked away in the closet, and they updated him letting him know that his dog Rex was still alive. However, the dog was dangerously injured, with bullet wounds to his neck and legs which would require immediate surgery.Javier and his family were joyous to learn that their dog survived, however, when news of Rex’s medical bills hit, joy was replaced with worry. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for family, friends, and the community to start a fundraiser for Rex, who is now aptly called The Hero Dog. On Friday, Rex successfully overcame his first surgery. So keep your fingers crossed and your prayers flowing for a full recovery from Rex the hero dog!The dog, the legend, pre-injury.The criminals are still at large at the moment, so we’ll hope that the long metaphorical mouth of Rex nabs the crooks in due time. For now, donate to Rex’s medical bills by visiting the family’s GoFundMe page.Facebook
